Campus police at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign have approved unlimited overtime in the wake of a serious crime spike. A recent incident of sexual abuse in a campus bathroom and several aggravated battery cases in the surrounding area are fueling police concerns.
According to The Chicago Tribune, the victim in the sexual abuse case was hit over the head in a dormitory shower by her attacker. The man then ran from the scene.
University spokeswoman Robin Kaler told the news source that the university is also taking precautions by increasing student patrols, locking dormitory security doors, installing security cameras and offering self defense classes.
Officials are also promoting the university’s SafeRides and SafeWalks escort programs and working with the local transit authority to gain access to more area security cameras.
