A security guard at Springs Memorial Hospital in Lancaster (S.C.) was arrested for sexually assaulting a patient while she slept.
Dontrail Campbell, 21, was charged with criminal sexual conduct in the third degree, which carries a sentence of up to 10 years in the state of South Carolina, reports WBTV.
Campbell was assigned to supervise the patient on Jan. 8 and had a warrant out for his arrest by Jan. 11. According to the patient, she was woken up by Campbell touching her inappropriately.
“You’re going to the hospital to be cared for and someone violates you in that way?” said Maria Rodriguez, a patient at the hospital.
Campbell was contracted to work at the hospital through a private security company, Allied Universal. He was fired from his position at Springs Memorial, along with the site supervisor at Allied Universal, who was also fired.
“We deeply regret the incident that occurred at Springs Memorial Hospital as it in no way reflects the professionalism that we expect from all Allied Universal personnel,” the company released in a statement. “As such, we have terminated the security guard for his actions in this situation as well as the site supervisor for not following proper company protocols.”
The former security guard admitted to the sexual battery in a recorded interview with Lancaster Police. A week after his arrest, Campbell was out of jail after posting a $10,000 surety bond.
While it remains unclear why the patient was being watched by Campbell, police have confirmed that she was not an inmate. Inmates usually require extra supervision when they visit hospitals.
“The safety of our patients is our highest responsibility,” said Page Vaughan, Spring Memorial Hospital CEO. “We are cooperating fully with law enforcement in their investigation. And they will be your best source for information.”
Campbell does not have any prior convictions in Lancaster County.
