A bi-annual survey of 250 healthcare organizations found that 27% of the respondents had at least one security breach over the past year, up from 19% in 2010 and 13% in 2008.
The survey found that 79% of security breaches were attributed to employees, while most others were attributed to actions from outsourced or contract employees, Network World reports. More than half of the breaches were identified as “unauthorized access to information” – usually the patient’s name and birth date.
The respondents indicated that they had almost all taken steps to prepare for a possible HIPAA audit. Four percent had been audited already.
