Montgomery Public Schools has introduced new security measures after school officials found two handguns in two weeks at one of its high school campuses.
The weapons were found at Sidney Lanier High School, which school officials report has had security issues in the past. However, the school is now implementing new security protocols that will serve as a model for other Montgomery public schools.
In addition to added security officers and metal detectors, the school is implementing a policy that requires students to wear photo ID while on campus. School officials will also perform routine searches of common areas and bathrooms, as well as random student searches.
According to the Montgomery Advertiser, Lanier has previously struggled with students from other schools entering the campus. A 15-year-old from another Montgomery school was recently arrested in connection with a handgun found on Lanier’s campus.
