LOS ANGELES – Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) and other city officials would like prosecutors to throw the book at Los Angeles School Police Officer Jeffrey Stenroos for lying about being shot and have him reimburse the city for expenses related to the incident.
The actual bill may be more than $400K. That money was spent on officer overtime from at least four agencies, including the LAPD, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, California Highway Patrol and FBI.
On Jan. 19, Strenroos claimed he had been shot by a man who was breaking into vehicles near a high school, and that his ballistic vest had saved his life. In response to the incident, police conducted a massive manhunt over a 7-square-mile area of Woodland Hills, costing the cash-strapped department precious resources.
When pressed for details, the officer said that he accidentally shot himself, however investigators don’t believe that story either.
Last week, LAPD officials turned over the results of their investigation of the incident. It remains unclear what, if anything, happened, reports the Los Angeles Times. The news source quotes LAPD Chief Charlie Beck as being “furious” about the case.
Prosecutors will not decide on how to proceed with the case for several days.
