School Internet Safety Program Criticized for Graphic Images

Published: March 22, 2011

THOMASTON, Maine  — A presentation on Internet safety given to incoming Oceanside High School West students has drawn criticism from people who believe it was too graphic. Three parents and one student sent E-mails expressing their concern, according to the high school’s future principal, Lawrence Schooley.

The presentation, which was given by retired Bangor Police Officer Dan Frazell on March 15 as part of Step Up Day, contained images of scantily-clad young women, the Herald Gazette reports. The purpose of these pictures was to demonstrate the dangers of posting inappropriate photos on social networking sites.

Frazell previously worked as a Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) officer. His presentation, called “How the Media is Killing Our Children,” came highly recommended by school counselors in the district.

Other parents praised the presentation for being realistic in its approach to the dangers of the internet, said Schooley.
