School Suspends 19 Students After Brawl, Changes Policies

SPRING, Texas — Nineteen students from Dekaney High School were suspended or placed at Highpoint School North for participating in a brawl that sent two students to the hospital on May 5. The school’s principal sent a letter home to parents on May 14 detailing the conclusions of an investigation into the incident.

The fight started between two students and spread to others during a 40-minute period in which large numbers of students were in the hallways, KHOU reports. Administrators, hall monitors, campus police officers and teachers moved to intervene and police officers were contacted.

The school has now implemented a plan to adjust schedules so fewer students will be in the hallways at the same time. An anonymous online reporting system for students to express concerns to administrators has been created, and the school has reinstated its zero-tolerance policy as part of this plan.
