BATAVIA, N.Y. – A school bus carrying 14 people on a field trip collided with a dump truck May 30 in western New York.
Three people on the bus were seriously injured, including one student, Jeremy Perry, 18, the bus driver, John Peck, 69, and a 31-year-old female aid, Sue Lawrence. Firefighters extricated Peck from the bus with the “Jaws of Life.” Lawrence may have broken her hip, and Perry was experiencing back pain. Due to the extent of their injuries, helicopters were called in to transport them from the scene. All three remain hospitalized.
Ten others whose injuries were less serious were transported by ambulance to a local hospital.
The bus was traveling from LeRoy Central School District to a veterinary clinic and was carrying 10 students, three staff members and the driver. According to police, the bus rear-ended the truck, which was waiting to make a left turn. As a result of the impact, the truck was pushed across the road and was hit by a car.
The accident occurred in a rural area between Buffalo and Rochester.
