S.C. Senate Fails to Override Veto on Campus Police for 2nd Time

Published: April 21, 2010

In a 26-13 vote, the South Carolina state Senate failed to override Gov. Mark Sanford’s veto of a bill attempting to expand the powers of private college campus police.

The override attempt is the second in less than a week. The measure would have given private campus police the same ability as public campus officers in cases such as accompanying college staff to banks, according to The State.

Additionally, the bill would have given private college police authority at college-sponsored athletic events away from the campus. Further, their jurisdiction would have been limited to 100 yards beyond the campus’ limits.
