Officials are refusing to comment on the hazing incident involving the Sayreville High football team, which is leading the social media rumor mill to heat up with theories of racism being involved in the New Jersey case.

Seven varsity players were arrested and charged with hazing and sexual abuse allegations. Three of the players have been accused of more serious crimes, including an act of sexual penetration. After the charges were revealed, the school district canceled the remaining football games.

One of theories out there, according to an NBC News report is that, “the seven kids are black, their victims are white, and Sayreville is borough veined by racism.”

In a statement to NBC News, Andrew Carey, the Middlesex County prosecutor, said race didn’t play role in the start of the investigation or in the charges against the accused.
