Santa Fe Public Schools in California has renewed a contract to bring unarmed security guards to its campuses next school year.
The $580,000 contract with AJF Enterprises Inc., a security company that’s worked with the district since 2012, was agreed on by school officials on June 16. The contract brings 18 guards to the district in total, including eight for Santa Fe High, five for Capital High, one each for the three middle schools and the remainder for all of the district’s elementary schools, according to santafenewmexican.com.
The guards don’t carry weapons or have the authority to arrest or detain students. School officials want the guards to talk to students and teachers to solve problems. Earlier this year a teacher was charged with child abuse after she allegedly through paperback books at students as they left class at the end of the day.
Initially the school board had approved a plan for armed city police officers to patrol the high schools, but the Santa Fe City Hall wasn’t sold on the decision and the plan seems to have ended.
