Santa Monica College Pepper-Spraying Incident Under Investigation

SANTA MONICA, Calif. — Santa Monica College president Chui L. Tsang has appointed a panel to investigate the use of pepper spray on students that occurred during a trustee meeting on April 3.

President Tsang promised a transparent investigation in letter to students on April 16, The Argonaut reports. “The panel is directed to consider all concerns raised about the police response and make such recommendations as it deems warranted on the policies, practices and protocols relevant to police response to demonstrations and similar events,” the letter said.

Students claim that police had harassed and intimidated student protest organizers long before the pepper-spraying incident. During a press conference denouncing the college’s contract education proposal on April 3, students accused police of removing posters announcing rallies and meetings.
