Proposed S.C. State Budget Cuts College Event Security Funding

SOUTH CAROLINA — A draft House budget, if approved, would require South Carolina colleges to pay for security and traffic control at special events such as football games. The proposal would save the Department of Public Safety approximately $647,700 a year.

Currently, the state is required to cover the cost of event security at state institutions, The State reports. The budget has already been approved by a House budget committee but will be debated by the House Ways and Means Committee. The full budget will be subject to a vote by the House sometime next month.

If the budget passes, colleges will most likely cover the cost by increasing event ticket prices, state Rep. Jim Merrill, R-Berkeley told the news source.
