TAMPA, Fla. – A judge has ruled that Florida colleges are justified in banning guns in dormitories, despite a state law that says it is legal to possess a firearm in residences.
In January, Florida Carry Inc., a gun-rights group, file a lawsuit against several universities and municipalities, including the University of Florida, arguing that the state law that allows citizens to possess firearms in their homes overrules another than bans weapons on school property, The Tampa Tribune reports.
However, Alachua County Circuit Judge Toby Monaco ruled that UF was not violating Florida law by recognizing the Legislature’s prohibition against guns in campus housing facilities.
Florida Carry plans to appeal the decision.
