The family of a Rider University student who died of alcohol poisoning has settled a lawsuit with the school for an undisclosed amount.
According to MercuryNews.com, Rider University has also agreed to ban alcohol in dorms and at on-campus fraternity and sorority events. Additionally, officials will tell parents about incidents involving alcohol and strengthen sanctions.
The lawsuit was prompted by the 2007 death of 18-year-old Gary DeVercelly, Jr. of Long Beach, Calif., who died after a night of binge drinking at the Phi Kappa Tau fraternity house. He consumed three-fourths of a bottle of vodka during the Big Brother Little Brother ritual. When he was rushed to the hospital, he had a blood alcohol content of 0.426 – five times the legal limit for driving.
