Charges have been filed and an investigation is underway into a Richmond Public School security officer’s handling of a fight between students on campus April 21.

Blurry video footage of the incident (included below this article) appears to show the officer throwing the student to the ground in the middle of a fight at Huguenot High School.

The parents of 17-year-old Andre Nious filed charges against the officer for what they consider excessive force, reports nbc12.com.

Richmond Public Schools spokesperson Kenita Bowers confirmed the district is investigating the incident and released the following statement:

“The expectation is that all staff will follow appropriate procedures when responding to a student altercation. As always, the safety of our students is a top priority and all students are expected to demonstrate appropriate behavior as outlined in the Richmond Public Schools Student Code of Responsible Ethics (S.C.O.R.E.) Handbook.”

Nious says he was sucker punched by another student while the officer was grabbing him. He says the officer slammed him on his head and then held him down.

Nious’s mother says she told school administrators her son was being bullied by a group of students in February.

Nious and the other students involved in the fight were suspended for ten days.
