Researcher Allegedly Switched Tags on Lab Mice, Stole Secret Material

NEW YORK — A researcher at Mount Sinai Medical Center was arrested Nov. 29 and charged with burglary and grand larceny after he allegedly burglarized a hospital laboratory and sabotaged the lab mice by switching their name tags.

Police said Dr. Mohsen Hosseinkhani was fired from the hospital in June because he had taken too much time off and his work was not high enough quality, The New York Times reports. He returned to the lab in July and was able to gain access because he had been fired by E-mail and his ID card had not been confiscated.

Hosseinkhani allegedly stole “secret scientific material,” including stem cell cultures, antibodies, invitrogen and other items worth thousands of dollars. According to police, he may have tried to sell the items to Russia.
