Report: Va. Tech Massacre Cost $48.2M
WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Center for American Progress has released a report estimating that the Virginia tech massacre has cost the university and taxpayers $48.2 million.
The report states that the university footed much of the bill — $38.77 million — and the state of Virginia paid $8.87 million, The Washington Post reports. The rest was covered by the local government ($3,581) and the federal government in the form of three grants ($3.66 million).
The Center for American Progress said that the estimates in the report are conservative and are derived from public records and information provided by the university.
According to the report, the $48.2 million breaks down as follows:
Virginia Tech’s costs:
- Safety and security $11,401,794
- Facilities and equipment $6,391,451
- Communications $2,519,264
- Legal and data retention $4,791,702
- Archiving $324,258
- Family services $2,747,138
- Campus health and wellness $7,426,361
- Other operational impacts $3,172,402
State of Virginia’s costs:
- Share of legal settlement $7,800,000
- Virginia Tech Review Panel $465,000
- Virginia medical examiner $69,650
- Virginia state police $531,000
Virginia Local Government’s Costs:
- Roanoke County Police Department $2,234
- Roanoke City Police Department $1,347
Federal Government’s Costs:
- U.S. Department of Justice grant $2,650,000
- U.S. Department of Education grant $960,685
- U.S. Department of Justice grant $51,000
