STILLWATER, Okla. — A recent audit report by the U. S. Department of Education found Oklahoma State University (OSU) noncompliant in its following of the Clery Act.
The audit looked at crimes reported to the OSU police department from Jan. 1, 2008 to Dec. 31, 2008. The report concluded that OSUPD had inadequate policy statements in its reports, misclassified a sex crime as a burglary and failed to report crimes for non-campus properties, The Daily O’Collegian reports.
In the first violation, the 2008 annual security review found that the police department failed to include a list of titles of individuals or organizations where students and employees could report crimes.
The second violation involved an incident that was reported as a burglary, but should have been classified as a forcible sex offense, where a student’s on-campus residence was burglarized and the victim was sodomized. The final violation alleged that OSU did not include crime statistics for geographical areas associated with the university, such as affiliate campuses. Authorities claimed OSU’s other campuses published their own annual security reports and that the university did not provide programs at the other locations that resulted in certification or degrees. However, the DOE noted that OSU was still required to report crime statistics from those campuses.
No fines were recommended in OSU’s case.
