Report Cites Calif. District’s Lack of Discipline Enforcement
VALLEJO, Calif. — The Solano County Grand Jury has released a scathing 10-page report against Vallejo High School, asserting that the institution lacks discipline enforcement, claims many teachers at the high school have voiced for quite some time.
In the report, released May 15, it states the Vallejo Police Department responded to 107 service calls from the campus between August and February — the most from any school in the Vallejo City Unified School District (VCUSD), TimesHeraldOnline.com reports. Of those, 60 calls were for assaults or thefts; four were for weapons incidents; seven calls were threats by students to faculty and staff; and 36 were for other various incidents.
The grand jury noted that many teachers and campus administrators would like to reinstate campus police officers, which were eliminated in 2008 due to cut backs.
Additionally, the district was cited for not enforcing its policy to require all students to wear ID badges on campus. Furthermore, the report charged that the district violated the California Education Code by failing to inform teachers about students who have engaged in criminal conduct. The grand jury also recommended that the district restore teachers’ access to the disciplinary part of a student management computer program, which would allow teachers to obtain information regarding prior disciplinary actions.
For its part, the VCUSD board said it will hold a special meeting to address the report and ongoing safety concerns.
