EDWARDSVILLE, Mo. — Prosecutors are reviewing how a patient at Gateway Regional Medical Center died while being restrained by hospital security personnel.
Granite City police Detective Brad Skalsky said that the department’s investigation did not indicate that the security officers intended to harm Anthony T. Burkey, St. Louis Today reports. The department’s findings will be turned over to the Madison County state’s attorney’s office when completed.
Burkley had been arrested earlier in the day while trying to break down the door of a home. Deputies took him to the hospital because he appeared to be hallucinating. When hospital security attempted to move Burkley to the psychiatric ward, he became combative; he was restrained for about four minutes before becoming unresponsive.
