Police Captain Under Fire for Living With Sex Offender

A Bridgeport police captain who has pushed for stronger protections against sex offenders in schools has come under scrutiny after it was discovered he is living with a family member who assaulted a teenage girl.

A senior police official with the Bridgeport Police Department in Connecticut has come under scrutiny after it was discovered he is living with a sex offender.

Capt. Roderick Porter, a senior police official who oversees security for the city’s schools, took in his nephew Devonn Porter last year after the 31-year-old was released from prison. Devonn was serving a nine-month sentence for impregnating a 13-year-old girl when he was 27, the Connecticut Post reports.

Last year, Roderick Porter wrote a grant application for state money to fund a controversial program to identify sex offenders if they come onto school grounds. Former school board member Maria Pereira called the police captain’s actions “hypocrisy.”
