Police Verify California Fire Suspects Are SBCC Students

SANTA BARBARA, CALIF.

Authorities have confirmed that nine of the 10 individuals involved in the bonfire that started the California Tea Fire are students at Santa Barbara City College (SBCC).

No charges have been brought against the 10 individuals yet. The persons range in age from 18 to 22. If they are charged with negligence, the suspects could potentially be responsible for financial restitution for the damages, as well as the cost of fighting the fire. According to The Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE), the Tea Fire caused $5.7 million in damages.

SBCC President Andreea M. Serban said in a statement that the college will cooperate in the ongoing investigation.
