CHICAGO — Chicago Public Schools (CPS) officials are examining whether or not it is cost effective to keep two police officers stationed at each of the district’s high schools. Doing so costs $25 million annually, triple the initial cost.
Since 2009, CPS has been paying the Chicago Police Department $8 million a year to station two officers at nearly 100 high schools, the Chicago Sun-Times reports. However, the department insists the real cost of police services is $25 million. CPS agreed to pay that amount, plus reimburse the department for underpayments since 2009.
The district is facing a $712 million deficit, and does not have the money to fund 4 percent teacher raises this coming school year.
