Man Kills Transplant Surgeon, Self in Hospital Parking Garage

ORLANDO, Fla. — Police have identified a man who shot and killed a transplant surgeon in a parking garage at Florida Hospital and then committed suicide. A motive for the shooting has not yet been determined.

Nelson Flecha, 53, was a patient of surgeon Dmitriy Nikitin, the Associated Press reports.  Flecha shot Nikitin on May 26 near the elevators on the first floor of the hospital’s parking garage and then turned the gun on himself.

Flecha specifically targeted Nikitin, and hunted him down in the parking garage, the Orlando Sentinel reports. Two handguns were recovered from the scene. Flecha has no criminal history in the state, according to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.

Medical officials did not specify whether Flecha was a transplant candidate or had received an organ.
