Police: Fight About Drugs Might Have Prompted Shooting Near Pittsburgh School

Published: November 13, 2013

PITTSBURGH — A 16-year-old male has been arrested for allegedly opening fire outside Brashear High School on Wednesday. Three male students were injured.

The incident may be related to a fight over drugs that occurred at the school in October, reports MSN.

The shooting occurred just before 3 p.m. as classes were being dismissed. One of the victims ran into the school and officials locked down the institution. Another victim was shot in the neck and shoulder. The third victim was found with a gunshot wound to the leg near the school, TribLive.com reports. None of their injuries were life-threatening.

Immediately following the incident, police shut down several nearby streets as officers and K-9 units searched the woods nearby for the shooter. All residents in the area were ordered to stay inside and lock their doors. The victims, one age 16 and two age 17, are not cooperating with authorities.

Police believe the suspect acted alone and specifically targeted his three victims.

Brashear High School and Pittsburgh South Hills 6-8 are open today but will be secured on modified lockdown for the remainder of the week. A modified lockdown means that only students, staff and visitors with a scheduled appointment will be able to enter the school building. Counselors will be on site and available for the remainder of the week to provide support to students as needed. School police will be on site and additional mobile units will be in the area. City police will also be on school property for arrival and dismissal time.
