BERKELEY, Calif. – To prevent student protesters from building an Occupy camp on UC Berkeley’s Sproul Plaza, police in riot gear intervened on Wednesday. The confrontations soon became violent.
Police used batons and bean-bag guns to break up the protests and tear down the encampments, reports the San Francisco Chronicle. Six students and one faculty member were arrested.
University officials told students they could protest “24-7” but would risk arrest if they erected tents, used cooking gear or camped overnight.
The UC Berkeley students were just some of the thousands of students across California who joined the Occupy movement. UC Berkeley students plan to attend the UC regents meeting next week to protest rising tuitions, reports the Contra Costa Times.
