PHILADELPHIA — In response to an “epidemic” of sexually transmitted diseases among youths here, the city of Philadelphia will install condom dispensers in 22 high schools.
Of the 130,000 students who have been tested for STDs in the last five years, 5% of them (6,500) have tested positive for diseases, including HIV, ABC News reports. As a result, dispensers, in which students as young as 14 can receive condoms for free, will be placed in nurse’s offices in city schools with the highest rates of STDs.
The city has plans to expand condom distribution to more schools; however, officials will not bring the program to middle schools.
