A patient who assaulted four nurses at St. John’s Hospital in Maplewood, Minn., with a metal bar died a short time after he was apprehended by police.
The incident occurred early Sunday morning when the unidentified 68-year-old male became violent with hospital staff. After only about a minute, he fled the facility, and police found him three blocks away, reports MyFoxTwinCities.com. Because the incident happened so quickly, the patient was able to escape before a lockdown could be implemented at the hospital.
Officers attempted to subdue the man with a Taser but then had to physically retrain him. During the struggle, the man died.
The patient was being treated at the hospital for stomach issues, although authorities say he appeared to be confused and paranoid.
As a result of the attack, one nurse suffered a collapsed lung, while another broke their wrist.
