SPARTANBURG, S.C. — A patient at Mary Black Memorial Hospital, who had been fighting with his family and hospital staff, suddenly died Friday after being handcuffed by security personnel.
Ansel Marlar, 46, began fighting with nurses after his request to be released from the hospital was denied, GoUpstate.com reports. In response, Marlar began hitting and kicking hospital staff, who then contacted security personnel for assistance. When a Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office deputy arrived at the scene, he handcuffed Marlar and rolled the patient onto his side.
Seconds later, Marlar had rolled himself onto his stomach and appeared unresponsive. The patient died moments after the deputy and nurses placed him onto a bed and removed the restraints. An autopsy report showed no evidence of a traumatic injury. Authorities are still awaiting Marlar’s microscopic and toxicology exams to determine the cause of death.
