West Palm Beach, Florida – The Palm Beach County School Board has officially approved some upgraded security measures on campus.
One of the most significant improvements is the adoption of a panic button, which can be used for a wide variety of situations, including medical emergencies, security issues, lockdowns, and minor disturbances, reports WPBF. Every school employee in the district has been issued a panic button.
Although the state of Florida does not require classroom doors to be locked, the Palm Beach school board is now mandating that classroom doors be locked when classes at Palm Beach schools are in session. School Board Chair Frank Barbieri said that the mandate will be strictly enforced. Teachers who don’t comply will be disciplined and possibly face termination.
Other security improvements include an upgraded video surveillance system at each campus, and emergency notification system upgrades and communication protocols.
