PORTLAND, OR – Oregon Health & Science University instituted a policy in order to arm its police force with guns this past Monday.
The policy was put into action after a six-year period of safety evaluations after the Virginia Tech shootings in 2007, reports KPTV,
Greg Moawad, director of the OHSU police department said that all armed officers have undergone extensive training and that part of the training was geared toward the handling of mentally-ill subjects.
“The folks that we have providing law enforcement services to our campus have had the exact same training as every other police officer in the state,” he said. “And, in fact, we have designed 130 hours of additional training prior to arming, which no other police officer in the state is required to undergo.”
