TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Two students from Florida State University were shot on Jan.9 when another student accidentally discharged his rifle in his apartment. Ashley Cowie was struck in the chest and died instantly. The bullet passed through Cowie and struck Keith Savino in the wrist.
FSU police responded to the off-campus apartment, which houses members of the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity, to investigate. They arrested Evan Wilhelm, the owner of the gun, and booked him into the Leon County Jail. He was charged with manslaughter, Central Florida News 13 reports.
Wilhelm was allegedly showing friends his new rifle accessories when the weapon discharged. Police say the investigation is ongoing.
Savino was transported to a local hospital for treatment. His injury is not life threatening.
