Ole Miss Adopts 2-Strike Policy For Alcohol, Drug Violations
OXFORD, Miss. – University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) officials announced that students convicted of two drug or alcohol abuse violations will automatically be suspended. Violations covered by the policy include drunk driving, public drunkenness, a minor in possession of alcohol and drug infractions.
The policy addresses what officials say is a “culture of alcohol abuse” at the school. It also is in response to the excessive drinking that often occurs before football games. The two-strike suspension rule went into effect Nov. 1.
The new policy is much like others adopted by campuses nationwide that are trying to protect students from crime and injury. Strict drinking policies may also protect colleges and universities against lawsuits.
Ole Miss officials have also created a task force to address student alcohol and drug abuse.
