Old Dominion U. Approves Campus Gun Ban

NORFOLK, Va. — Old Dominion University’s Board of Visitors approved a regulation Jan. 12 banning everyone except law enforcement officers from having a gun in campus buildings and at events.

The ban came in response to Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli’s opinion that the university’s existing policy barring people with concealed handgun permits from bringing a firearm on campus was not enforceable, The Virginian-Pilot reports. The new regulation applies to concealed handgun permit holders.

According to Cuccinelli, visitors to campus who have no affiliation with the school and are not attending an event could bring guns onto campus unless the school had a regulation in place that was approved by its governing board.
