TULSA, Okla. — A routine hospital security patrol turned into a life-changing moment for Marrico Edmundson, a security officer at Saint Francis Hospital, when he helped deliver a baby on the hospital’s circle drive on Friday evening.

Surveillance footage captured the event as the baby’s father, Seth Buchanan, drove up and flagged down Edmundson for help. Seth’s wife, Ashton Buchanan, was already in labor in their truck when her water broke just steps from the hospital entrance.

Edmundson, who is also a Tulsa firefighter and trained EMT, sprang into action — just in time to catch baby Theodore, who weighed 7 pounds, 5 ounces.

“I went to cradle the head, and when I did, the shoulders came out and the whole body just dropped into my hands,” Edmundson said during an interview with News9.

However, the delivery wasn’t without its challenges. The baby’s umbilical cord was tightly wrapped around his neck. Acting decisively, Edmundson used two fingers to free the cord. Moments later, Theodore took his first breath and began crying, a sign of relief for everyone involved.

While this was the third time Edmundson had delivered a baby, he admitted that Theodore’s birth was the most stressful of his deliveries.

“This one here takes the cake,” Edmundson told KJRH. “I wasn’t ready for this one, and it caught me by surprise. But my training just kicked in, and I did what I had to do to deliver a baby until staff arrived.”

The Buchanan family expressed immense gratitude to Edmundson for his life-saving efforts.
