TULSA, Okla. — After 12 years of contracting with the Safe Schools hotline, which encouraged students to report school violence or threats of violence, the Oklahoma Department of Education has ended the partnership, citing high costs.
The 24-hour hotline cost the state more than $250,000 a year; however, within 12 years, the hotline only received 7,400 calls, according to Tulsa World. The department now urges hotline callers to contact its customer service desk, which will route the call to a prevention specialist, or call the police.
