Officials: New School Year Confusion Caused Student Pick-up Mix Up

DALLAS—Parents at Maple Lawn Elementary School are questioning security procedures after a man was able to leave the campus with a 5-year-old boy he did not know.

The incident occurred just after noon on Aug. 24, as the kindergarten students were being dismissed, reports KDAF.com. The unidentified man was allowed to leave with the child without showing identification to security personnel.

The episode prompted a police manhunt, and in less than two hours later, the man and the child were found in a local neighborhood. Police said there was no kidnapping offense, as the man was at the school to pick up another child. The boy was not injured.

School officials blamed the mistake on the start of the new school year, citing that teachers are unfamiliar with the students’ parents. However, officials are looking to change security procedures.
