Officer Fatally Shot While Monitoring Patient
Sheriff’s Deputy Steven Sandberg was shot once and killed inside a St. Cloud Hospital room.

A sheriff’s deputy in Minnesota was fatally wounded when a suspect related to a domestic incident took the deputy’s gun and shot him October 18.
Aitkin County Sheriff’s Deputy Steven Sandberg, 60, was monitoring a suspect in a serious domestic-related incident when the suspect began struggling around 5:15 a.m.
Hospital officials say the suspect, 50-year-old Danny Hammond, was able to take Sandberg’s gun and shoot him inside his St. Cloud Hospital room, according to NBC News.
Hospital security officers responded to the room and stunned Hammond with a Taser. After Hammond was taken into custody he became unresponsive and died.
Police are investigating both deaths, but have not confirmed a cause of death for Hammond.
Hammond had warrants out for his arrest for kidnapping, assault, terroristic threats and other violent offenses. Police have not announced why Hammond was being treated at the hospital.
Sandberg had been an investigator with the Aitkin’s County Sheriff’s Department for over 20 years and leaves behind a wife and daughter.
