NEW YORK – Nearly 5,000 school safety workers here rallied outside City Hall Friday to demand fair pay for school security officers.
The majority of protesters were women, who say they’re paid $7,000 a year less than their male counterparts, CBS New York reports.
The school safety officers were joined by Lilly Ledbetter, a public advocate who sued Goodyear when she learned she was being paid less than her male coworkers. Although she lost the case, in 2009, President Barack Obama signed the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act into law.
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said that the city will settle a federal lawsuit alleging pay discrimination against school security officers.
