The NRA’s task force on school safety apologized Monday for citing in its report a school shooting that never actually happened.
The alleged shooting was reported to have occured in 2010 at Hastings Middle School in Minnesota. Although the incident did iinvolve a student with a firearm, no shots were fired due to a school police officer tackling the student before he could fire his weapon, reports the New York Times and Mother Jones.
“We have corrected that detail in the report and sincerely apologize for the error,” the National School Shield task force said in a statement sent to TPM. “We particularly regret any hurt the error may have caused to those who experienced or were close to those involved in either horrible event.”
The task force’s report, which was issued last week, proposed arming selected school staff.
