Two people were hospitalized after a boy allegedly opened fire at his Indiana middle school Friday morning.
Both victims, a 13-year-old female student and a teacher, were taken to local hospitals following the shooting at Noblesville West Middle School, reports CNN. The suspect, a male student, is in custody.
IU Health Methodist Hospital confirmed they are treating an adult shooting victim and Riley Hospital for Children confirmed they are treating one teenage victim.
Indiana State Police Sergeant John Perrine said the families of the victims have been notified but their conditions have not been released.
Noblesville Police Chief Kevin Jowitt said his department received a report of an active shooter at the school just after 9 a.m. The gunman reportedly asked to be excused from class and then returned with two handguns and opened fire, according to CBS News.
It is still unclear what happened next, but Jowitt said the situation was resolved “very quickly” and the student was apprehended in the classroom.
Seventh-grader Ethan Stonebraker says his science class was taking a test when the student walked in, pulled out a gun and started firing. His teacher then ran at the student, swatted the gun out of his hand and tackled him to the ground.
“If it weren’t for him, more of us would have been injured for sure,” praised Stonebraker.
A school resource officer in the building also responded, police said.
The middle school was placed on lockdown for part of the morning. Aerial video showed students being evacuated from the school to awaiting school buses. Students were taken to Noblesville High School to be reunited with their families.
A secondary threat was also received at Noblesville High School.
“We have multiple officers and a command post established at Noblesville High School and are diligently ensuring the safety of students and staff there,” said Jowitt. “We have not received any information that this has been anything other than a communicated threat.”
The school was later given the all clear.
Noblesville West Middle School has approximately 1,300 students and is located about 25 miles north of Indianapolis.
