DEKALB, Ill. — Following a months-long federal law enforcement investigation, Northern Illinois University (NIU) Chief of Operations Eddie Williams announced Tuesday that he will retire at the end of the month.
Williams, 68, has worked at the university for 43 years, and was known for overseeing the development of 21 new buildings and avoided employee layoffs and furloughs, the Chicago Tribune reports.
Of late, Williams has been in hot water with the FBI, which began investigating whether he used campus law enforcement to respond to crimes reported at a low-income housing development he owns near NIU. Additionally, the FBI claimed Williams used campus police to perform background checks on prospective renters.
During the two-month investigation, NIU officials denied Williams used campus security for his personal needs.
