More than 1,200 firearms, knives, boxcutters, razors and Tasers were removed from New York City students in the 2013-14 year, according to a New York Post report.
According to the New York City police, students use the weapons to protect themselves in their neighborhoods and schools, rather than to commit crimes.
“They just feel safe having a weapon in their possession,” said NYPD Inspector Charles McEvoy, who is the executive officer of the School Safety Division.
Knives were the most common weapon uncovered, while five Tasers were also recovered. Metal detectors picked up 712 weapons, 58%, according to the New York Post report. Another 42% were found from staff and student tips. According to the report, none of the guns recovered were fired. The city is reviewing a plan to add scanners to the schools.
