New AI Technology Could Revolutionize School Security

A new type of technology developed by a Texas-based artificial intelligence solutions company is being called a game changer for school security.

SparkCognition developed a computer vision solution to enhance campus security and student safety. Visual AI Advisor uses existing school camera systems to monitor for potential threats in real time. By leveraging SparkCognition’s Visual AI Advisor, schools can provide a more secure educational environment for students, enhancing school safety by proactively identifying and preventing active shooter incidents. It can identify weapons, individuals, and their movements, and alert law enforcement when a threat is detected.

SparkCognition’s AI technology is far more than just gun detection. Their Visual AI platform utilizes existing school CCTV infrastructure to proactively detect everything and anything unusual – a weapon, an open door, unauthorized access, a license plate, vehicle identification, suspicious behavior, a person in distress, a fire, etc. Upon detecting a threat, a security breach, or other developing situation, it transforms data into real-time actionable insights that instantaneously send alerts and alarms to school staff and law enforcement with detailed information via web and mobile apps, email, and text, and then designates specific actions like initiating lock-down procedures.

Studies have shown that up to 80% of active shooters have weapons visible as much as 30 minutes before shooting – critical under-utilized time that safety officials could leverage to prevent an attack. Visual AI Advisor offers early alert and enhanced situational awareness as risks develop, capitalizing on those critical seconds and minutes prior to an incident and ultimately stopping it from occurring.

“Students need and deserve to feel safe in the classroom, and traditional approaches to safety fall short of delivering the advanced warning required to prevent serious and often fatal consequences to advancing threats,” said Stephen Gold, Chief Marketing Officer at SparkCognition. “With SparkCognition’s Visual AI Advisor, schools can predict and prevent the greatest challenge to learning and development, ensuring students and faculty are safe and able to focus on the educational experience.”

The technology is customizable, so schools can choose the alerts they want to receive. For example, they could receive an alert if an unknown vehicle with an unknown license plate pulls onto campus or an individual from that vehicle emerges. They could also receive an alert if a briefcase is detected carrying a weapon.

SparkCognition currently has 130,000 cameras under contract, in over 16 countries, and more than 125 pre-built use cases. https://www.sparkcognition.com/solutions/school-safety/

Could you ask SparkCognition for the name of the study that says:
“Studies have shown that up to 80% of active shooters have weapons visible as much as 30 minutes before shooting – critical under-utilized time that safety officials could leverage to prevent an attack.”

They make that claim without backing it up.
