RENO, Nev.— The Washoe County School District will spend more than $5 million on locks, fences and redesigned front entrances over the next three years.

In total, $5,145,640 will be spent to put locks on 1,740 classroom doors and fences around elementary schools, as well as create a single point of entry for every middle school, reports the Reno Gazette-Journal.

The expenditure was prompted by a shooting that occurred at Sparks Middle School last October.

Additionally, the school board is close to approving a Safe and Healthy School Commission to oversee an audit of every school next year. A similar audit was conducted last year by Nevada’s neighbor to the north, Idaho, which uncovered major safety and security gaps in many of the state’s schools.
