A study released May 17 has found that 30 percent of female doctors have experienced sexual harassment on the job, and nearly half say it has negatively affected their careers.
The report, which was published in the journal JAMA, also found that 70 percent of women physicians perceived gender bias at work, while 66 percent said they had actually experienced it.
The study surveyed more than 1,000 male and female physicians who earned a career development award from the U.S. National Institutes of Health. Questions in the survey covered their experiences as doctors, including gender bias, inappropriate sexual advances, subtle bribery for sexual acts and threats.
Only four percent of the men surveyed said they had experienced sexual harassment on the job. Twenty two percent of men perceived gender bias at work, and 10 percent said they had actually experienced it.
