Wilmington, North Carolina – A 15-year-old New Hanover High School student has been charged with shooting his classmate.
The incident happened on Monday at about 11 a.m. as several students were fighting, reports WXII. It created a chaotic scene that resulted in dozens of local law enforcement officers responding, reports StarNews.
School officials responded to the shooting by putting the campus into lockdown and having students and campus staff members shelter in place. Students were later evacuated to a nearby middle school where they were reunited with their parents.
Shortly after the school shooting, a video of it was posted online. It shows several students involved in an altercation and then three shots being fired.
In a press conference, Wilmington Mayor Bill Saffo said the school was lucky.
“I saw that video and to see that…person take matters into their own hands and start shooting a gun in a crowded school is unfathomable,” reports StarNews.
The student who was shot was injured and taken to a local hospital, and his injuries aren’t considered life-threatening, reports WSOC.
The suspected shooter has been charged with attempted first-degree murder, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury and weapons offenses.
Classes on Tuesday were cancelled.
