NEW YORK—New York Gov. David Paterson has submitted legislation that would require every school to post the state’s violence hotline in the hallways so that students who have been bullied can have quick access to services.
Bill No. 291 comes after a 14-year-old student, Kimquan Green, had his glasses broken 16 times at Middle School 142 and endured an attack that sent him to the hospital, reports the Daily News. Currently, the boy’s mother is trying to get him moved to a different school under a safety transfer.
The governor’s bill also centers on ensuring that schools are required to follow the state’s human right laws against discrimination.
This year, the city’s education department, with the help of the city council, has also launched a campaign against bullying. Additionally, agency officials said they are working on Green’s case.
