N.Y. Cop Resigns Over Accidental Discharge at High School

Published: March 17, 2013

Sean McCutcheon, a school resource officer at Highland High School, had been placed on leave following the March 5 incident.

A departmental investigation concluded that the discharge was unintentional and a result of “officer error,” reports the Daily Freeman.

McCutcheon, a veteran police officer with more than two decades of experience, accidentally fired his gun at 1:38 p.m. in the high school’s highway. No one was injured during the incident, nor was anyone nearby when the gun went off.

The district implemented the SRO program following the Newtown, Conn., shooting. During the planning stages, administrators decided to hire trained security personnel with law enforcement backgrounds. Officials also agreed to allow officers to carry their side arms inside buildings.
